Marketwatch iPhone App Review

December 6th, 2011 Leave a comment Go to comments

Marketwatch.com has an excellent investor App with features that are hard to find elsewhere. Marketwatch.com is generally an excellent site for value investors because the quotes available are very ‘dividend aware’, most of the time the dividend amount and yield are correct and available for most companies.

However, the App takes a different route. It’s the way of the world right now in App development, Apps are developed by different teams than the designers of desktop websites and the features can differ a lot (so it goes with Marketwatch). So, if you expect the same features as the website you will be disappointed. However, take the App for what it is, it is very useful.

Key Features:

  • Real-time quotes & enhanced charts
  • Customizable watchlist
  • Twitter section to follow MarketWatch columnists
  • MarketWatch podcasts
  • Text-to-Speech feature for Top Stories
  • Innovative “Cruise Control” feature to allow for
  • Hands-free listening of Top Stories and podcasts
  • Articles to Save and Share

Here are the features that interest me most and are noteworthy from competitor apps. It provides a lot of realtime information. Here’s the list:

  • Realtime Market Quotes
  • Realtime Before/After Market Quotes
  • Realtime Market Impacting News/Company Alerts
  • Before Market Stock Futures
  • Overseas Market Hours/News

.

Latest News

Realtime headlines provide impacting information on companies and markets.

Intermixed with the headlines are breaking news stories, companies news stories.

Also, Latest News tab provides timely information premarket on the S&P500 and Dow futures so you can know how the market will open.

At the top, a graphic lets you know which international markets are open/closed.

Stock Quotes

Realtime quotes are provided before, during and after hours.

Noticeably absent is basic information such as P/E, dividend amount, dividend yield, or individual company news (big oversight?)

The long term charts are available by turning your iPhone sideway; good news, the chart goes out to 3 years.

Portfolio Watchlist

The App maintains one watchlist which you can add stocks to as you gather stock quotes.

Like the individual stocks quotes, all the realtime information can be viewed for all of your watchlist quotes at once.

Bad news: unlike the desktop counterpart quotes for preferred stocks don’t appear even though they are in the database.

Otherwise, the stocks available are quite good, it includes many stocks on foreign exchanges.

More Tab

Nestled in this last tab is much of the articles and commentary available on the Marketwatch.com website.

Strangely, the ‘Tech News’ gets its own front page tab, while other article categories are relegated to the More tab.

It would make more sense to put the Watchlist on its own tab and move the Tech News to the More tab.

Summary

The Marketwatch.com App provides very useful information for investors who need the most timely information about markets and stocks. I’ve pointed out a few things that could be improved which would make the navigation and information more complete.  The App is available at no cost and can be downloaded from the iTunes AppStore.
