Dividend Investing Tools
Overall Wall Street is pretty dismissive of dividend investing and that is reflected in the tools and information available about income producing investments. Fortunately, there are many good sites out there that offer tools to help you model your returns, view past returns or find important financial information.
Here is a list of tools that I use frequently.
Calculating Past Returns
It is instructive to look at past returns. It may surprise you how well some investments do over time because your attention span tends to may distort what it actually happening due to short term analysis. I talked about a tool that was available on Sharebuilder.com that calculated past returns, including a chart (unfortunately, that tool isn’t available anymore).
Here is a tool that does something similar.
Longrundata.com – a dividend reinvestment tool that tells you past returns.
Calculating Expected Return
OK, you have a dividend yield and expected growth rate in the dividend. How much money will you have in the future? Also, what if I add more money over time or if I don’t want to reinvest dividends? No problem, the calculator below will handle these and other situations.
Dividend Ladder – portfolio and stock dividend calculator.
Dividend Payment History
Most companies publish their dividend payment history on their own websites. The site below consolidates this information on one page and also handled stock splits. It doesn’t handle mergers or spinoffs correctly, then again, I have never seen a tool that does.
Longrundata.com – Historical Annual Dividend Payout (scroll down page).
